Dreams don't start with lore.

They start with memories. With moments that could have been, that are desired. Our world is one that came to be from one creature's dreams. She was a special creature, one of a kind, with a peculiar gift. She could see, even shape the dreams inside the minds of men. She could drift in and out of idle thoughts as easily as we walk through rooms. Her very life had sparked within the dream and each time that spark went out, to the dream she had returned. She had her own great adventures, her own very magickal story but this is not the time or place for that. Our story only exists because hers came to and end... so to speak. It is not the things that happened during her life that have significance here, but the things that's happened to end it are the very reason we exist. The world she lived in was not of her own, her last life so much more significant to her than any before and she was not ready for rampage that threatened to end it. There was great discord and she fought it to her very undoing. Kind of.

Her desire for this life had been a strong one and her affinity with the realm behind the veil combined with that yearning caused something amazing to happen. She had never truly lived before so she had never died, though technically you could say she hasn't still. But when her life in the world not her own had been taken and her spark could not return to the dreaming that she came from, her mind grasped at every tendril it had ever touched to weave borders and boundaries and endless paths through countless planes - now all dreams lead here. Good dreams, bad dreams, day dreams... They are the glowing  stones on the pathways of Topside, the rushing water of Reverie Falls. They are the foundations the world was built upon. Her death became her eternal sleep and her desire to save the world became the dream of a new one.

This new world was the point where all worlds overlap, where all dreams meet. She slumbered on, clinging to the sparks of those she had loved and those she had lost. Clinging to the sparks of those touched by those she touched and thusly the web grew, strong and solid. Those sparks were like seeds, planted deeply in the dream, they sprouted and flourished, they grew like trees, grew into life itself. She slumbered on, clinging to the dream of everything she ever knew and she knew this was no sleep she would ever wake from. Darkness would come, for there is no death without darkness and her world would grow dark with it. It grew with its own kind of life, every kind of nightmare for every kind of dream. She knew darkness all too well. It had haunted her for all of time. Horrors had chased her in and out of dreams for as long as she had been, and she was dismayed at the thought that darkness would overcome even this. No... She could not let nightmares reign over the dreaming...

She froze. Everything froze. If it could not be vanquished, it could be trapped in time. The lands along the edges of the world would be eternally trapped in their season, forever locked in this infinite twilight. The darkest of things were left to the coldest of places and in her way to contain what she could not destroy, she made a place to lock away the chaos in the silent ice of midnight winter. She cast aside her fear, hushed it deep within the Still and her courage would remain there as well to always keep it at bay. She cast aside her bitterness and hunger, it fell from her hard, fell deep and burrowed far into the glittering ground to become the first of Thystles. She sighed softly, and she spoke them into creation; from all the places In Between she did breathe life so below into the Grey Ones. It was they who would always protect the fragile balance in the shadows of this life. She let herself go, turned to mass of fluttering butterflies that separated as the took flight every which way and 9 pieces of eight did fall like stars, turning to trinkets as they did land scattered across the world far from each other and any hands that would gather them for the wrong reasons as each had a guardian to keep it and a place they both must be kept; four for four corners, two for the eternal balance, one for each side of the looking glass and one book of life with every name of every soul to live or flicker in and out of this world. This was her way to help ensure that the nightmares which had always plagued her would never be able to overcome the pure essence of this place, frozen in time it would always thrive with that special magick only dreams can make.

It was always her belief that with love you could conquer all things and she let herself have faith in that. Her heart had always been kind and her love was pure, her love for life and all things in it. For such a thing, she knew she could endure and her heart did shine so brightly; it burst forth from within her in brilliant light and lilac rays, a promise of her love and thusly was the birth of the evershining sun in an otherwise dark sky.

In the early days of life, the flicker was sporadic and quick. Only the native races thrived in this place, unconcerned with the faded ghosts that often vanished as quickly as they came. They built their small civilizations along the edges of the world, each season muse to a different culture of nature. Dreamers never stayed for longer than a few seconds but even such a small thing had its impact, a chain reaction spreading from dream to dream until the web became so strong that some dreamers no longer faded. Their dreams were so deep and so vivid that their essence entwined with this world and they were able to cross planes and interact with the dream instead of a brief intangible encounter. When this began, it escalated quickly and the dreamers began to shape the world the more they became aware. The strongest pull was the very center of the world and it didn't take long for the city of Dusk to form, a fantastical empire wrought with the blend of many cultures from many different worlds and times with a landslide of evolution in a very short time.

In the early days, the seasons were wyld and vicious Thystles roamed with a careless brutality, swarming above ground from their nests to hunt down and slaughter anything unfortunate enough to cross their path. For thousands of years this was the way of the world, the race of bloodthirsty fae-like creatures was ancient and their society celebrated in their grand Hunt with ceremony and grandeur that had become a foundation of their culture. At first when the first dreamers began to mingle and colonize the Dusk , it was peaceful. Dreamers and natives alike lived with a synergy that suited both and really stimulated the growth of their mélange of culture. Centuries passed before the Thystles even gave them a thought, but when strangers began to intrude in the underground it stirred a backlash quite out of proportion to the offense.

The Twilight Massacre of 2861 was a bloodbath beyond what anyone could have imagined. During the Midsummer Eclipse, when the dreamscape was drenched in utter darkness, Thystles poured into the city with greater display of numbers then had ever been witnessed before and swarmed over the city like locusts. Their screaming caravan was elegant, ornate carriages driven by various creatures carried wingless warriors while the ones that could take flight did so in howling mobs, swooping down on terrified outlanders to scalp them and slit their throats or ravage them down to bare bones in a matter of minutes. This systematic attack was timed to coincide with their Queening, a monthlong feast featuring elaborate competition between eligible Thystle maids to place her house in the High Court. This is the only occasion where Thystles will break the blood rule and kill one of their own kind. For the entire eclipse that season they set up camp on the blood stained land of the fallen dreamers and reveled in festivity and carniverus gluttony as unmated females of nobility whittled each other down to the last standing who then challenged the current Queen, giving her the option to surrender with her life or battle to the death. Dvyendu Morningstar was one of the most fearsome queens in Thystle history and it was no shock when she chose the latter; even less of one when she faced Necrosie Blight barehanded and literally forced her to eat her own still-beating heart before ripping her wings off (to later use in a glorious headdress still worn on occasion by reigning queens at their crowning). With that, the Thystles retreated merrily back underground to their nests as if they hadn't just committed the most violent attack on topsiders ever seen in the dream to this day, hailing their queen with renewed vigor for the rest of her reign. By the 2870's, the city was well reestablished but this time they took precautions. The entrance to the tunnels below were sealed off and guarded and a giant wall was erected on the edges of the ether, never again would the Dusk be left so unprepared against an enemy.
